Volume 1, Issue 6 – Writing Feature Articles with Elementary Schoolers

Welcome to this week’s edition of Best Practices Weekly.  Today we’ll be discussing the concept of giving effective academic feedback.

Often, the only type of non-fiction writing in elementary school is research reports. In an article for The Reading Teacher, Kent State University professor Denise Morgan reports on a promising additional genre: the feature article. In her study, Morgan found that feature articles were one way to let students “have their writing connect with the real world, to live through the writing process in a way similar to what authors do, and to provide them with experience selecting a topic, researching, and composing nonfiction text.”
